Pocket Muse: Meta Charm Aims for Holiday Shelves With a 2-Inch Avatar Screen and 5G

Zuckerberg showed Muse Charm at Connect, a keychain puck with a roughly 2-inch avatar screen, fingerprint wake, and a December shipping goal. No consumer price yet.

MENLO PARK, Calif. - Meta is turning its viral Muse AI agent into a pocket gadget. At Connect on Sept. 23, Mark Zuckerberg briefly showed Muse Charm, a keychain-size device with a roughly 2-inch screen, fingerprint wake, and a path to holiday shipping, according to Reuters reporting filed Sept. 24 and on-site coverage from The Verge and PCMag.

Charm is not another pair of glasses. Zuckerberg held a rounded black puck with a short lanyard and said owners can talk to Muse without unlocking a phone or opening an app. Reuters lists a built-in 5G modem for Muse access away from Wi-Fi, and notes the device cannot place phone calls. The Verge’s Jacob Kastrenakes describes a fingerprint sensor on the top-right corner, a small camera, and at least three front microphone openings.

Meta has built only a few units so far. Zuckerberg said finishing materials are still being chosen and floated a translucent “elevated hacker aesthetic” look that would show internals. The Verge and PCMag both quote a December holiday shipping goal. Meta has not published a consumer price, a cart page, or final battery figures in the newsroom posts Techtember reviewed at filing time.

The screen is the product pitch. Reuters says the display is about 2 inches (5 cm) and can be thumb-navigated, with a customizable Muse character at the center. On-stage demos and live blogs show the avatar reacting while Zuckerberg presses the Charm to speak. Analysts quoted by Reuters compared the companion feel to late-1990s Tamagotchi toys and said Gen Z users who already treat chatbots as partners may be the early audience.

Charm sits inside a wider Muse push. Meta’s Connect posts say Muse is coming to Meta AI glasses for hands-free tasks, and Zuckerberg framed “personal superintelligence” devices as a bigger near-term bet than the metaverse pitch that renamed the company. Reuters notes Muse’s download surge in the weeks before Connect and the market reaction around shopping and travel partners.

Similar AI handhelds have struggled. Reuters and The Verge both flag Rabbit’s R1 as a cautionary launch that overpromised and under-delivered. IDC’s Jitesh Ubrani told Reuters some buyers may prefer a keychain over camera glasses for privacy reasons, while Smart Analytics Global’s Linda Sui warned mass-market demand is still unproven unless Charm does jobs phones, watches, earbuds, and glasses cannot match.

Until Meta posts price, materials, and a firm ship window, Charm remains a Connect prototype with a holiday target rather than a stocked SKU. Buyers should treat December as Meta’s stated goal, not a confirmed store date.
