Did You Know: Amazon's New Kindles Have Batteries You Can Replace Yourself
Amazon says every model in its redesigned Kindle, Paperwhite, and Colorsoft lineup has a user-replaceable battery, ahead of an EU rule that takes effect in February 2027.

SEATTLE - Did you know that every e-reader in Amazon’s redesigned 2026 Kindle lineup has a battery the owner can replace? Amazon introduced the new Kindle, Kindle Paperwhite, and Kindle Colorsoft on Oct. 1, 2026. Kevin Keith, Amazon’s vice president of Kindle, told The Verge that all three feature user-replaceable batteries to comply with European Union regulations. For a product family whose recent models have been glued shut, it is a quiet but real change.

The reason is a European law with a fixed start date. Article 11 of the EU Batteries Regulation, Regulation (EU) 2023/1542, applies from Feb. 18, 2027, and requires portable batteries in products placed on the EU market to be removable and replaceable by the end user. The European Commission’s guidance says a battery counts as readily removable when it comes out with commercially available tools, without proprietary tools, heat, or solvents. Any specialised tool that is needed has to ship free of charge with the product. Batteries must also be available as spare parts for at least five years after the last unit of a model is placed on the market.

Amazon’s software pointed this way months before the launch. In May 2026, Good e-Reader reported that a pulled Kindle firmware build, version 5.19.4, contained a warning for batteries the device could not recognize. The message said charging had been limited to protect the device, recommended a battery that meets Amazon specifications, and offered a QR code to buy a battery replacement kit and view replacement instructions. Older Kindles were glued shut, Good e-Reader noted, so a battery swap meant prying off the back cover and working loose an adhesive-backed cell.

The batteries sit inside a broader redesign. The new 6-inch Kindle starts at $149.99 and is on sale now, while the Paperwhite (from $199.99) and the Colorsoft (from $289.99) are on preorder and ship Oct. 28, according to Amazon and The Verge. Amazon rates the base Kindle at up to six weeks of battery life and the Paperwhite at up to 12 weeks, and says the base Kindle uses a battery made with 100 percent recycled cobalt. Amazon’s launch post does not list a price for replacement batteries, and Good e-Reader said it was still unclear whether Amazon would sell them itself or through a partner.
