Amazon’s fully redesigned Kindle family, introduced on Oct. 1, 2026, remains the live shelf story this weekend, with flush-front displays, edge-to-edge body color, thinner builds, and new aluminum options, according to About Amazon and hands-on coverage from The Verge and WIRED. The base Kindle starts at $149.99 and is available now. Paperwhite and Colorsoft stay on preorder for a rolling basis and still ship Oct. 28.

The redesign starts with a new reverse-stack display construction. Amazon says every model now has a flush reading surface instead of a raised border, with the device color wrapping from front to back. New finishes include Ube purple, Alpine Sky, Seaglass Green, Graphite, and Fig on Colorsoft Signature. About Amazon said the housing on plastic models uses recycled materials, and aluminum backs use 80 percent recycled aluminum with a matte finish.

The 6-inch base Kindle is the most compact Amazon has shipped. Plastic 16GB models start at $149.99 in Ube and Graphite. An aluminum 32GB version without lock-screen ads starts at $189.99 in Alpine Sky and Seaglass Green. Amazon rates battery life at up to six weeks and claims book opening is about 30 percent faster than the prior release. The Verge measured the slab at 6.8 mm thick and about 140 grams, with the power button moved to the right edge near the top.

Kindle Paperwhite remains waterproof with adjustable warm light and up to 12 weeks of battery life. Plastic 16GB Graphite starts at $199.99. Signature Edition aluminum models with 32GB, auto-adjusting front light, double-tap page turns, and rear pogo pins start at $249.99 in Graphite and Seaglass Green. Kindle Colorsoft uses a redesigned color stack with nitride LEDs and an oxide backplane for paper-like color. Plastic 16GB Graphite starts at $289.99. Signature Edition aluminum with 32GB starts at $319.99 in Graphite and Fig.

Kids versions of the new Kindle, Paperwhite, and Colorsoft add artist-designed covers and 12 months of Amazon Kids+, starting at $179.99. Signature Editions can charge upright on a $59.99 Charging Dock and pair with a $79.99 Page-Turn Cover that mounts over pogo pins. Kindle Click, a separate $34.99 Bluetooth page remote for 2024-or-later Kindles, was covered in a companion Techtember piece and is not required for the core redesign.

Amazon said Kindles have posted three straight years of double-digit global growth, with more than 720 billion pages read in 2025. WIRED reported that Amazon’s Kevin Keith, vice president of devices, said 60 to 65 percent of recent buyers are first-time Kindle owners, and that memory cost pressure helped keep list prices aligned with earlier 2026 bumps. Exact storefront timing outside the markets About Amazon named should be checked locally before treating any listing as locked.
