CUPERTINO, Calif. — Apple introduced iPhone Duo on Wednesday, its first foldable iPhone, a passport-shaped handset that opens to a 7.6-inch inner display and is to go on sale Oct. 23 from $1,999.
Closed, the phone uses a 5.4-inch outer display. Opened, Apple said, it is the thinnest iPhone the company has shipped. Both screens share the same aspect ratio, so photographs and video scale from one to the other without being cropped.
The Duo is powered by the A20 Pro chip, a dual-battery system and a vapor-chamber thermal design, Apple said. The inner display has a nano-texture finish intended to reduce crease glare.
Storage begins at 256 gigabytes for $1,999. Higher configurations reach $3,199 for 2 terabytes, according to MacRumors’ account of Apple’s pricing. The phone is offered in star white and night sky.
Pre-orders begin Oct. 16. Availability is Oct. 23, Apple said, at apple.com, Apple Stores and select carriers.
John Ternus, who became chief executive at the end of August, presented the product at the Steve Jobs Theater. Apple described a precision hinge and a titanium body. It did not disclose battery capacity in milliamp-hours.
