CUPERTINO, Calif. - Apple began rolling out iOS 27 on Monday as a free update for iPhone 11 and newer models, putting a rebuilt assistant branded Siri AI at the center of a software release that also refreshes Liquid Glass and speeds up everyday tasks across the phone.

Apple confirmed the Sept. 14 date at its Sept. 9 “Surprise and Shine” event alongside iPhone 18 Pro and the foldable iPhone Duo. The company said the update arrives for compatible iPhones through Settings → General → Software Update, with iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, tvOS 27 and visionOS 27 timed for the same day.

Siri AI is the headline change. Apple describes a ChatGPT-like assistant with a dedicated Siri app, on-screen awareness and deeper personal context drawn from information stored on the device. It can still be invoked by pressing and holding the side button. Apple Intelligence features, including Siri AI, require an iPhone 15 Pro or newer; older phones on the iOS 27 compatibility list keep the classic Siri experience. At launch, Siri AI is an English-language beta subject to daily usage limits, with expanded access planned as a paid option later. Apple has said the feature will not ship initially in the European Union on iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and watchOS 27 while it works through Digital Markets Act disputes with the European Commission. Additional languages including French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish are expected in October, according to Apple’s published roadmap summarized by MacRumors and MacObserver.

Beyond the assistant, Apple said Liquid Glass gains more uniform refraction, sharper icons and a slider to dial clarity versus tint. Performance claims include app launches up to 30 percent faster, Photos library loading up to 70 percent faster and AirDrop transfers up to 80 percent faster. New tools include Extend and Reframe in Photos, photorealistic Image Playground options, Shortcuts created from natural-language descriptions, and U.S.-only Apple Cash bill splitting that can read a receipt through Siri mode in Camera. iPhone Handoff lets two phones share one number with carrier support; T-Mobile and Deutsche Telekom are first, with Verizon and the U.K.’s EE expected later in the year.

The software lands days after iPhone 18 Pro pre-orders opened and a month before iPhone Duo goes on sale Oct. 23. For most owners, Monday’s download is the first tangible piece of Apple’s fall stack - and for those on older hardware, a reminder that the new Siri stays out of reach even when the operating system does not.
