SAN DIEGO - Did you know that Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 is the first smartphone SoC cleared so phones can support 8Kp60 video capture? At Snapdragon Summit on Sept. 22, 2026, Qualcomm unveiled Extreme alongside Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6. PetaPixel and Qualcomm’s product brief frame Extreme as enabling the first commercial devices to record 8K at 60 frames per second, with 4Kp240 slow motion on the same platform. The Spectra ISP is cited at about four times prior-generation video throughput, with 256 times more AI data per pixel for computational photo and video work.

Measured platform deltas, as Qualcomm told reporters and PetaPixel summarized, put Extreme at about +13% CPU, +44% GPU, and +35% NPU versus the prior generation, with roughly 30 to 40% better efficiency across the board. Those figures are vendor claims, not independent lab scores. Extreme also adds Advanced Professional Video (APV) recording and related pro video paths that the non-Extreme Gen 6 does not match on the same chart.

On-device AI is part of the Extreme pitch. TechCrunch reported that the high-end part can run a roughly 30-billion-parameter mixture-of-experts (MoE) model locally, activating only a subset of parameters per task. Sensing hubs on the new platforms are described as able to run smaller models (on the order of hundreds of millions of parameters) for always-on personalization features.
OEMs Qualcomm named for upcoming Elite Gen 6 and Extreme Gen 6 devices include Honor, IQOO, Motorola, Nubia, OnePlus, Oppo, Redmi, RedMagic, vivo, Xiaomi, and ZTE. Ship dates and which SKUs take Extreme versus Gen 6 remain OEM decisions. Prefer the sourced fact over launch hype: first smartphone SoC path to 8Kp60 capture, plus 4Kp240, Spectra throughput and AI-per-pixel claims, vendor performance deltas, and the ~30B MoE on-device figure from Qualcomm’s summit materials as covered by PetaPixel and TechCrunch on Sept. 22, 2026.
