CUPERTINO, Calif. - Did you know the iPhone Duo’s folding screen has a replaceable cover layer that AppleCare+ customers can get swapped for $19 in the U.S.? Kate Bergeron, Apple’s VP of Hardware Engineering, told content creator Angelica Siciliani Fendi (@angietutorials) the Duo has a cover layer on top of the matte display coating that helps minimize the crease. “It’s actually replaceable… you can peel off that layer and get a new one,” Bergeron said.

MacRumors’ Joe Rossignol reported Oct. 1, 2026 that U.S. AppleCare+ customers can get the cover layer replaced for $19 per Apple’s site. The cost without AppleCare+ was not disclosed. The service is likely handled through Apple Stores and authorized providers rather than a customer DIY kit. 9to5Mac’s Ryan Christoffel flagged the same Bergeron quote, noting the $19 AppleCare figure was spotted by Quinn Nelson.

Android Authority’s Hadlee Simons warned owners not to peel the layer themselves. Like other foldables, the swap is meant for authorized repair. Simons noted Samsung offers one free protector swap in the first year, then about $19.99 for later replacements, putting Apple’s AppleCare+ price in a familiar ballpark for foldable screen care.

Pre-orders for iPhone Duo start Friday, Oct. 16 at 5 a.m. PT, with stores opening Friday, Oct. 23. The foldable starts at about $1,999. The replaceable cover layer is a small but practical detail for anyone weighing crease wear over a multi-year ownership cycle.
