SHENZHEN, China - OnePlus launched the OnePlus 16 in China on Monday, confirming a Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 chipset, a 9,000mAh battery and a 200MP main camera on a phone the company is not planning to sell in the United States or Europe.

The device arrives months after OnePlus said it was exiting those markets, which left the OnePlus 15 as its last Western flagship. In China, the 16 is positioned as a performance-first handset with a vapor chamber OnePlus calls Glacier cooling, described as about 40% larger than the prior generation, plus custom network, display and touch chips for connectivity and responsiveness.

Battery capacity jumps from 7,300mAh on the OnePlus 15 to 9,000mAh here, with 100W wired and 50W wireless charging. OnePlus says a wired charge can restore about 80% capacity in 37 minutes and claims at least five years of battery health, without publishing a detailed cycle-count chart for this model.

The 6.78-inch OLED panel peaks at 185Hz for games and can run the system UI and apps at 165Hz, a change from the OnePlus 15, which offered a 165Hz panel but did not keep system navigation at that rate. Peak brightness is listed at about 2,000 nits in launch materials circulating with the event.

The rear camera stack uses a 200MP main sensor (1/1.4-inch, f/1.6), a 50MP ultrawide and a 50MP 3x telephoto on a larger 1/1.95-inch sensor than last year’s unit. OnePlus highlights full-resolution 200MP stills and an XPAN-style 65:24 capture mode. A 50MP front camera handles selfies and video calls.

Three colors are on offer: Tomorrow’s Starlight, Dark Forest and Mars Masterpiece. Starlight adds rear LED lighting that can show a large “16,” a small “x” and other patterns. Other confirmed features include ColorOS 17 on Android 17, an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor, IP68/69/69K ratings and dual stereo speakers.

Memory and storage configurations run 12GB/256GB, 12GB/512GB, 16GB/512GB and 16GB/1TB. The recommended starting price is 5,999 yuan (about $896), with a promotional price of 5,699 yuan (about $852) for the base model. Higher configs step up from there. Preorders are live in China, with sales set to open Oct. 13 at 10 a.m. local time, according to launch coverage.

OnePlus has not announced a global retail plan for the 16. Buyers outside China will need an import route if they want the handset, and carrier or warranty support will not match a local release.
