Meta Readies Camera-Free Luna Smart Glasses for Connect, Report Says

The Information says Meta's Luna glasses drop the camera, keep six microphones and a Meta AI button, and could debut at Connect on Sept. 23-24 with October shipments.

MENLO PARK, Calif. - Meta Platforms Inc. is preparing a camera-free pair of smart glasses, internally codenamed Luna, that could be unveiled at Meta Connect on Sept. 23 and 24 and begin shipping as soon as October, according to a Sept. 16 report from The Information cited by Engadget, The Verge, Android Central, and PetaPixel.

Luna is meant to answer growing backlash over camera-equipped frames, which The Verge said have been banned from New York courtrooms to Britain’s largest pub chain. Instead of a camera, the glasses are said to carry six microphones so wearers can talk to Meta AI and Muse, the company’s consumer AI agent, plus a side button that wakes Meta AI and speakers aimed at the ears, similar to current Meta glasses. Dropping the camera also lets Meta slim the temples so the frames sit closer to ordinary spectacles, according to the same report.

The Information said Luna would launch in two designs, Clubmaster and Burbank. Reuters, The Verge, Engadget, and PetaPixel have repeated those details. Meta did not immediately comment when Reuters asked. Connect is six days away. October is the shipping target in the report, not a confirmed store date.

The stills here are the camera glasses Meta already sells, not Luna. Meta Glasses, launched in June with EssilorLuxottica, start at $299 and include styles such as Meta Glasses by Kylie. Ray-Ban Meta Wayfarers remain in the line. Those frames use a 12-megapixel camera, an LED recording lamp, and Meta AI with Muse Spark. Luna, if it ships as described, would sit beside that lineup rather than replace it.

The Information also said Meta will show a separate augmented-reality pair at Connect, internally codenamed Phoenix, aimed at a 2027 virtual workspace and cinema screen. Snap this week opened Specs pre-orders at $2,195 with dual waveguide displays. Luna is the cheaper bet: audio AI without a lens that can film a stranger. Meta still has to prove a camera-free pair can sell when the current glasses are already on faces.
