iPhone Duo Walk-In Warning Disputed as Gurman Says Apple Has Sent Stores No Such Guidance
MacRumors reported that some Apple retail staff were told to discourage customers without pre-orders on launch day, Oct. 23. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said stores are still sorting allocations and any ruling on walk-in stock is premature.

CUPERTINO, Calif. - Shoppers hoping to walk into an Apple Store and buy an iPhone Duo on launch day got mixed signals this weekend. MacRumors reported Saturday that some Apple retail employees had been told there would likely be no iPhone Duo stock for walk-in purchases on Friday, Oct. 23, and had been instructed to discourage customers without pre-orders from coming in expecting to buy one.
Hours later, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman pushed back. “There’s been zero communication to Apple retail stores saying this,” he wrote on X. “Perhaps a manager at select stores told employees this, but nothing like this has been communicated to date. I’m not saying it won’t happen, but it hasn’t.”
In a follow-up post, Gurman said the stores he had talked to were “still sorting through the number of units they are expecting to receive by next Friday versus how many have been allocated for pre-orders. So any ruling on inventory for non-pre order customers is premature.”
MacRumors itself said it was unclear how firm the warning was or whether it applied worldwide. Apple’s online store tells customers to check back on Saturday, Oct. 24, for pickup availability, the site reported. Pickup reservations were briefly offered when pre-orders opened and then disabled, and the Oct. 24 message does not guarantee stock.
The supply squeeze itself is not in dispute. Pre-orders opened Friday, Oct. 16, and launch-day delivery dates vanished within minutes, as Techtember reported at the time. MacRumors said that within 30 minutes every configuration in Apple’s U.S. online store showed Jan. 25 shipping estimates. Apple told the Financial Times that demand was “nothing short of extraordinary” and that it was working to get devices to customers as quickly as possible.

Production has been tight for months. Nikkei Asia reported in early September that output had reached only a few hundred devices per day in late August, according to MacRumors. Gurman said earlier this month that Apple had at one point believed production constraints could push the start of sales into November, before it built enough inventory to keep the Oct. 23 date.

The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 in the United States, and the first pre-order deliveries are scheduled for Oct. 23. Whether any Apple Store has a spare unit on the shelf that morning is, for now, an open question.
