SHENZHEN, China - Honor confirmed Sunday that its Magic 9 and Magic 9 Pro Max will ship with a 55-megapixel “Agile Eye” front camera built around a square sensor - the first square selfie camera on an Android phone, the company said in a teaser ahead of a Sept. 28 launch in China.
Honor said the 1:1 sensor is meant to keep a wider field of view when cropping for portrait or landscape framing, so users can switch orientations without rotating the handset. The square module will not run across every Magic 9 variant; the company said it is exclusive to the standard Magic 9 and the Pro Max, with remaining models to be detailed at the full reveal.

The front camera sits inside a broader imaging push with German cinema-camera maker ARRI. Honor has already disclosed dual 200-megapixel rear cameras developed around that collaboration, a 500-millimeter teleconverter kit, and an ARRI Cinema Mode that includes LogC3 and ARRI Wide Gamut 3 color science. Official launch materials also highlight an 8,000-milliampere-hour-class battery story and MagicOS 11 for the series, with pre-orders already open in China.
For a phone market still dominated by pill-shaped cutouts and circular punch-holes, the square selfie is the detail that traveled farthest on Sunday - a product oddity with a clear camera thesis, not just another megapixel race, two weeks before Honor’s Beijing event.
