Apple Sets Oct. 28 Los Angeles Launch for Touchscreen MacBooks and iPad mini, Gurman Reports

Apple is inviting some media to an all-day product launch experience in Los Angeles, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, with OLED touchscreen MacBook Pros, a new iPad mini and M6 Macs expected.

LOS ANGELES - Apple has begun inviting some members of the media to an “all-day product launch experience” in Los Angeles on Wednesday, Oct. 28, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported on X on Thursday. Gurman wrote that the gathering is “for the touch-screen MacBooks, iPad mini, M6 Macs.” Apple has not announced the event or the products.

The date moves the media hands-on one day later than Gurman’s earlier reporting, which had Apple introducing the devices “on or around” Tuesday, Oct. 27, with an online video presentation followed by an in-person session for reporters, according to MacRumors. His new post does not say whether the products will be announced on Oct. 28 itself or shortly before it.

The headline machines are expected to be redesigned 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with OLED touchscreens and a Dynamic Island in place of the display notch, according to 9to5Mac and MacRumors. Recent reports have played down hopes for a much thinner chassis, but Gurman has said the new laptops will be “significantly lighter” than the current models. MacRumors said Gurman’s reporting earlier this month indicated the machines will stay in the MacBook Pro family rather than carry the rumored “MacBook Ultra” name.

The redesigned laptops are expected to use the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips that arrived in the current MacBook Pro in March, rather than new M6 silicon, according to 9to5Mac and iClarified. Apple is separately expected to move the existing 14-inch MacBook Pro design and the iMac to the M6 chip without changing how they look.

The iPad mini is expected to switch from LCD to OLED, gain a front camera positioned on the landscape edge for video calls and get a revamped speaker system, MacRumors and iClarified reported. iClarified said leaked code points to an A20 Pro chip replacing the A17 Pro in the current model.

Software has offered its own hints. iClarified noted that touch-gesture references have surfaced in macOS 27.2 inside apps including Photos and Notes, though it cautioned that macOS already accepts touch input through Sidecar, so the code alone does not confirm a touchscreen Mac.

The Los Angeles gathering would be Apple’s second product moment this month. On Oct. 13 the company introduced its smart home lineup, including the HomeView display, HomePod mini 2 and a new Apple TV 4K. The iPhone Duo, Apple’s first foldable, opens for preorders today, Oct. 16, at 5 a.m. Pacific time.

Until Apple sends its own invitation or posts to its newsroom, the date, the product list and the format remain reporting rather than an announced schedule.
